Set in the winding hutongs of old Beijing, the story begins in 1979 following a group of young people's return home to Jiudaowan. Aiming to change his social status to match his first love, heiress Shi Xiao Na, Yang Shu Mao decides to venture into business in Guangzhou: the forefront of reform and opening up. As he learns on the job he quickly discovers his high business acumen, leading him to startup a real estate development company with childhood deskmate, Zhao Ya Jing. In spite of his improved financial standing, the large social gap is too much to overcome for Xiao Na's parents and the couple eventually accept their reality and drift apart. There by his side to console him is childhood friend Ye Fei, the older "sister" he's always protected. Only after growing up does he come to realize his feelings for her went beyond that of "kinship". But just as Shu Mao and Ye Fei find their life partner in each other, he learns Ya Jing has been plotting with his mother for her to become his wife, putting his love with Ye Fei in jeopardy. As his love life falls apart at the hands of his parents, his only outlet is his business where trials and tribulations loom. Over the course of forty years of reform and opening up, this young group of people go on to face the ups and downs in life, love and career, as they experience the struggle and grow together.
