A magical snake transforms itself into a beautiful woman and weds a mortal man. The gods are offended that the snake has done this without their permission, and orders her to change back before July 7. Madam White Snake misses this deadline in order to save her husband from harm. Impressed that she has risked her life for this display of true love, the gods allow her to remain in human form.
