Fate binds a deposed king to the man who becomes his last guardian. In a remote mountain village in 15th-century Joseon, the village head Heung Do hears a rumor that a village that takes in an exiled nobleman will receive prosperity and good fortune. Hoping to improve the lives of his poor fellow villagers, he submits a petition, not knowing that the guest will turn out to be the deposed young king Danjong. An unexpected attachment gradually forms between the dethroned ruler and the man assigned to watch over him, while the quiet village is drawn into dangerous court intrigues in which loyalty and the will to survive collide.
