In the reign of King Rama VI, Saen, a servant in the household of a powerful nobleman, sees the family's youngest son, Khun Rak, playing Rama in a khon performance and cannot get him out of his mind. To stay close to him, Saen agrees to a risky favour for Khun Rak's elder brother and ends up wearing the mask of Thotsakan, the demon king, at a royal celebration — just as he wears a mask of loyal devotion while harbouring a forbidden longing for his young master. The book was adapted into the series The Masked Hearts.
